Arne Slot is running out of time and Jamie Carragher has delivered the starkest warning yet .
Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in Tuesday’s Champions League first leg marked their 14th loss of the season across all competitions . Fourteen. For the reigning Premier League champions, that’s catastrophic.
CARRAGHER’S VERDICT
The former Reds defender didn’t hold back on CBS Sports.
“I think the performances from Liverpool this season are a big worry for the manager,” Carragher said. “I think I said on this show in the group stage he’s got to do something, he’s got to change something.
“He’s tried everything really, in lots of different ways, but nothing seems to be able to work and it’s just at no stage this season have I ever felt Liverpool were in control of a football match.”
That’s the killer line. Never in control. Either end to end basketball, or slow and boring and predictable. No middle ground. No identity.
THE SQUAD DEFENCE
Carragher didn’t pin it all on Slot, though. The squad has problems too.
“Do I think another manager could come in straight away, or any manager, say you give him that squad? I don’t think it dramatically changes. I really do think the makeup of the squad, how it’s been put together, the lack of options in certain areas, is a big problem as well. So it’s not just all about the manager but as we know, managers carry the can.”
That’s the reality. Slot might pay the price for a squad that isn’t his.
THE TOTTENHAM HINT
While Liverpool are struggling, Tottenham are in absolute freefall. Six straight defeats, the first time in the club’s 144 year history . Igor Tudor has lost his first four games in charge. The fans are furious. Relegation is a genuine threat.
Yet in something of a hint at their intentions, Tudor will face the press at Hotspur Way on Friday ahead of Sunday’s Anfield clash . He’s still standing. For now.
A six game losing streak. Four defeats under Tudor. A trip to Anfield. If Tottenham get battered and they probably will, the axe could finally fall.
THE STAKES
Liverpool need a win. Tottenham need a miracle. Anfield on Sunday is a collision of two teams in crisis.
For Slot, another defeat could be fatal. For Tudor, it almost certainly would be.
Fourteen defeats and counting. Patience wearing thin. Carragher’s warning is clear: change something, or someone else will.
