Manchester City will face Inter Milan in Hong Kong this summer and for anyone in blue, that fixture will instantly bring back memories of the greatest night in the club’s 132 year history.

The two sides meet at the Hong Kong Stadium on Saturday 1 August as part of City’s preparations for the 2026/27 season. Pre season friendlies are usually about fitness, sharpness and avoiding injuries.

This one? It is about nostalgia. And a reminder of just how far this club has come.

Three years on from Istanbul

When City and Inter get together in east Asia, it will be just over three years since they met at the westernmost tip of the same continent.

Istanbul. The Bosphorus. The Ataturk Stadium. 10 June 2023.

City’s first ever Champions League final. A European Treble on the line. Nerves everywhere.

Pep Guardiola’s side had swatted aside Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to get there. They were favourites. But favourites means nothing when the trophy is in sight.

Rodri’s calmest moment

City dominated possession without ever hitting their free flowing best. Ederson had to make several interventions as Inter lurked, waiting for any lapse in concentration.

Then, the moment.

Manuel Akanji freed Bernardo Silva down the right. His cross was deflected back towards the edge of the box. And Rodri cool as you like, stepped up and sidefooted it home.

The calmest man in all of Europe. The biggest goal in City’s history.

Wild celebrations followed. From the players. From the bench. From the thousands of Blues filling one end of the stadium.

Then came the hard part. Seeing it out. Ederson pulled off stunning stops right up to the final whistle. When it finally blew, everyone of a City persuasion let loose.

The rematch

The two sides met again on the very first matchday of the 2024/25 campaign. A new Champions League format. A decidedly less dramatic affair.

Two stubborn defences. A 0-0 draw. No fireworks. No history.

Since then, plenty has changed in both Manchester and Milan. Players have come and gone. Managers have shifted. But the bond between these two clubs forged on that June night in Istanbul remains.

The bottom line

There will likely never be celebrations to match those after the 2023 final. That was a once in a lifetime moment. But coming up against Inter will always take City fans back to that night.

The Hong Kong friendly is about the future. About getting ready for another campaign. About fitness and tactics and all the boring stuff that matters.

But when the two sides walk out, everyone will remember.

Istanbul. Rodri. The trophy. The greatest night in City’s history.

Here’s hoping for an entertaining fixture. And a few more memories to add to the collection.
