PORTSMOUTH, June 30, 2026. Championship side Portsmouth are exploring the possibility of bringing Abu Kamara back to Fratton Park, with talks ongoing between the two clubs over a potential summer move for the Hull City winger .
The 22 year old, who spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Portsmouth and played a starring role in their League One title triumph, has been identified as a primary target as John Mousinho’s side look to strengthen ahead of the new campaign . Kamara contributed 10 goals and 11 assists across all competitions during that memorable season, earning cult hero status among the Pompey faithful .
His time at Hull, however, has been less straightforward. After joining the Tigers from Norwich City for a fee rising to £4.5 million in August 2024, the London born forward found himself on the move again last summer . He spent the 2025/26 season on loan at La Liga side Getafe, but the spell was disrupted by an ankle injury that sidelined him for four months between December and March . He returned to make 12 appearances in Spain’s top flight, though only one of those came as a starter, before featuring in a 2-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano in early May .
Financial factors at play
Hull’s financial situation could prove pivotal in negotiations. The Tigers are understood to need to raise funds to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, potentially making Kamara available for a fee in the region of £2.5 million to £3 million . A significant reduction from the sum they paid Norwich just two years ago.
Portsmouth’s interest in Kamara is long standing. They were keen to sign him permanently after his successful loan spell but were unable to match Hull’s financial package . Now, with the player potentially surplus to requirements at the MKM Stadium, the South Coast club are hoping to finally secure their man.
No formal agreement has yet been reached, but discussions are believed to be ongoing . Should a deal fail to materialise, Kamara is due to return to Hull for pre season training on Monday week, ahead of the club’s summer trip to Slovenia and Turkey .
