‘Not Even Half the Player Maldini Was!’ Desailly Delivers Brutal Bastoni Verdict as Barcelona Circle

Barcelona have been handed a sobering reality check over their pursuit of Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni, with French icon Marcel Desailly questioning whether the Italian has the leadership qualities to thrive at the very highest level.

The Catalan giants have made Bastoni a priority target as they look to fix a defence that has cost them dearly in European competition. But Desailly, a World Cup winner with France, is not convinced.

Not even close.

‘Consistent, but limited’

Speaking on The Italian Football Podcast, Desailly acknowledged Bastoni’s reliability.

“He is a very consistent player,” the former AC Milan and Chelsea defender said. “I think he’s been at Inter for seven seasons and has performed well regardless of who the manager has been.”

Then came the but.

“I don’t see him as a top class international leader,” Desailly continued. “That’s where his limitations lie. He has most likely helped Inter win the Scudetto this season, but that’s where I see his limitations at international level.”

It is a brutal assessment of a player widely regarded as one of Europe’s finest young centre backs. Desailly sees a solid defender. Not a leader. Not a game changer.

‘Barcelona are weak in defence’

From Barcelona’s perspective, Desailly understands the attraction.

The Blaugrana have incredible players in every position except at the back. That is why they do not win the Champions League. That is why they are chasing Bastoni.

“Bastoni can raise Barcelona’s level,” Desailly admitted. “It’s a club that needs a strong defensive attitude.

“He could be the player who brings the consistency and strength that Barça’s defensive unit needs to reach another level. It’s clear that Barça need defensive leaders.”

But then came the killer blow.

‘Not even half the player Maldini was’

Comparisons with Paolo Maldini have been floated. Both left footed. Both elegant. Both Italian.

Desailly shut that down immediately.

“He’s left footed, and you could compare him to Maldini, but he’s not even half the player Maldini was.”

Ouch.

Maldini is arguably the greatest defender in the history of football. Expecting anyone to reach that level is unfair. But Desailly’s point is clear: Bastoni is not a transformative signing. He is an upgrade not a revolution.

The bottom line

Barcelona need defensive help. That is not in doubt. Bastoni would improve them. That is also not in doubt.

But is he the leader they need? The player who will organise the backline, grab games by the scruff of the neck, and drag Barcelona through the toughest Champions League nights?

Desailly does not think so.

The Frenchman sees a consistent performer. A reliable presence. But a top class international leader? No.

Barcelona must decide whether “consistent” is enough. Because the price tag Inter will demand will be anything but.
