HOUSTON, June 24 Kylian Mbappe delivered another masterclass as France eased past Iraq 3-0 to book their place in the knockout stages of the World Cup, with the Real Madrid forward scoring his second consecutive brace in a performance that underlined his status as the tournament’s most fearsome attacking talent.
The France captain opened the scoring with a powerful left footed strike from outside the area, a goal that brought him level with Miroslav Klose’s World Cup record and moved him to within two of Lionel Messi, who had earlier scored twice for Argentina. Mbappe added his second after the interval as Didier Deschamps’ side controlled the contest with authority.
The victory was also marked by Mbappe’s 100th appearance for France, a milestone that added further significance to an already dominant display. He attempted eight shots, three of which were on target, and repeatedly tested the Iraq defence with his direct running and movement.
While Mbappe missed three clear opportunities, his relentless pursuit of goals and refusal to be deterred by earlier misses demonstrated the elite mindset that has made him one of the game’s defining players. A lengthy weather delay at half time could have disrupted France’s rhythm, but Mbappe ensured his side remained focused and professional.
Ibrahima Konate, the other Real Madrid player in the France squad, was an unused substitute.
The result means France advance to the knockout rounds with a game to spare, confirming their status as one of the tournament favourites. For Mbappe, the World Cup continues to serve as a stage for greatness, and his performances so far suggest he has no intention of stepping out of the spotlight.
