Ademola Lookman has etched his name into Champions League folklore after his crucial first half goal sent Atletico Madrid past Barcelona and into the semi finals for the first time in ten years.

The Nigeria international was the calm in the storm on a dramatic night at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Atletico lost the second leg 2-1, but progressed 3-2 on aggregate. And Lookman was the difference.

“It was a rollercoaster,” he told TNT Sports. “With us going 2-0 down, and then it was a game of two halves, really. We stuck in there, and we got through to the semis.”

The goal that changed everything

Barcelona started like a train. Lamine Yamal scored early. Ferran Torres added another. The tie was level. The pressure was immense.

Then Lookman stepped up.

Marcos Llorente led a rapid counterattack and delivered a low pass into the box. Lookman timed his run to perfection. The finish was composed. The stadium erupted.

“As the game is going on, the momentum changes,” Lookman explained. “The pause [for the injury] kind of switched us back into gear. We were able to create a few chances, and we got the goal.”

Barcelona thought they had another equaliser later on. VAR ruled it out. Eric Garcia was sent off. And Atletico held on.

Nigerian history

With that strike, Lookman became only the fourth Super Eagles player to score in a Champions League quarter final. He joins Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze and Obafemi Martins in an exclusive club.

Now, even more history is within reach.

Only two Nigerians have ever scored in a Champions League semi final: Finidi George and Obafemi Martins. Lookman has the chance to become the third when Atletico face either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the last four.

Since joining Atletico, Lookman has made a strong impact. This was his sixth goal for the club and arguably his most important yet.

What comes next

Atletico are in the semi finals. That is the headline. But Lookman is not finished.

He has already climbed the list of Nigeria’s top scorers in the Champions League. Only Osimhen and Martins have more. And with at least two more games to come, he could climb further.

For now, though, Lookman is just enjoying the moment.

“We stuck in there, and we got through,” he said. Simple. Honest. And absolutely spot on.

Atletico are back among Europe’s elite. And Lookman is leading the charge.
