Arsenal are ‘considering’ a summer swoop for Newcastle defender Tino Livramento, throwing a major spanner in Manchester City’s plans .
The 23 year old has been strongly linked with a move to the Etihad, with ex Everton chief Keith Wyness claiming a deal is “pretty much nailed on” for around £70m . But now the Gunners are circling, and City’s interest has reportedly been “played down” in recent days .
THE LIVRAMENTO FILE
Livramento joined Newcastle from Southampton for £32m in 2023 and has since made 100 appearances for the Magpies . He’s versatile, can play both full back positions and has three England caps to his name .
His contract runs until 2028 , but contract talks have stalled. Newcastle want to keep him, but if he won’t sign a new deal, they’ll look to cash in before his value drops.
THE PRICE TAG
Newcastle are demanding around £60/70m for their star defender . That’s nearly double his Transfermarkt valuation of €40m (£34m) , but in today’s market, English talent with Premier League pedigree commands a premium.
Wyness told Football Insider: “I heard from somebody the other day. I talked to an agent who said that it’s going to be happening. They did expect that sort of big number around the £70m mark, which is a big number, as we say, breaking the record. But I think he’s the right one for City.”
THE ARSENAL INTEREST
According to The Telegraph, Arsenal are now weighing up their own move . The Gunners have several factors in their favour:
Livramento shares the same agent as Mikel Arteta , which could smooth negotiations
Ben White’s future at the Emirates is uncertain after falling behind Jurrien Timber
Arsenal need to strengthen at full back, and Livramento fits the profile
However, any deal would likely require sales first. Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus have been mentioned as possible departures to raise funds .
THE INJURY CONCERN
There are worries about Livramento’s fitness history. He missed an entire season at Southampton with a severe knee injury , and has managed just 11 starts this campaign due to hamstring and knee issues . He returned as a substitute in Newcastle’s draw with Barcelona recently, but the medical will be crucial.
THE VERDICT
City have been linked for months. Arsenal are now making moves. Newcastle are playing hardball but know they’re vulnerable with contract talks stalled.
This one’s going to run all summer. And with two Premier League giants circling, Livramento’s price tag isn’t coming down.
