Manchester City travel to face a resolute Crystal Palace this weekend, in a clash that pits the league’s most in form attack against its second stingiest defence. But the story within the story is the remarkable rise of Rayan Cherki, whose creative numbers are frankly ridiculous.

Pep Guardiola’s side are flying, fresh off four straight wins including that midweek triumph over Real Madrid. They’ll be confident, but they’re walking into a tough ask at Selhurst. Oliver Glasner’s Palace are sitting pretty in the top four, with three wins in five and a defence that’s only conceded 12 all season. It’s a proper test.

All the pre match talk, though, is about one man: Rayan Cherki. The French playmaker isn’t just City’s secret weapon anymore, he’s statistically the most efficient creator in the entire Premier League. The numbers don’t lie. With five assists in the league, he’s averaging one every 80 minutes. Let that sink in. For comparison, Bruno Fernandes (who leads the league with six assists) needs 224 minutes per assist. Jeremy Doku needs 236. Cherki is operating on a different planet right now.

“He sees things others don’t,” a City insider said this week. “Pep trusts him completely.” That trust is shown in the team sheet; Cherki’s started the last two, against Sunderland where he bagged two assists and the Madrid clash. From Lyon prospect to central figure in a matter of months, it’s been some rise.

The big question is whether he can unlock this Palace backline. Joachim Andersen and Marc Guéhi have been a brick wall all season. They’ll know shutting down Cherki’s passing lanes is key to getting anything from the game. But with Erling Haaland lurking, ready to feast on any half chance, Palace’s discipline will be pushed to its absolute limit.

For City, a win keeps the pressure firmly on Arsenal at the summit. For Palace, it’s a chance to prove their top four credentials aren’t a fluke. But for the neutrals, it’s all about watching the league’s most explosive creator try and pick the league’s toughest lock. If Cherki delivers here, the hype will be impossible to contain.
