Two sides separated by just a point in the Bundesliga relegation scrap go head to head on Sunday, with Werder Bremen knowing a win could open up a near insurmountable gap while Köln desperately need three points to keep the chasing pack at bay.

The good news for FC Köln is that they haven’t lost any of their last three contests. The bad news? They haven’t won any of them either.

Three draws on the spin. A late fightback in the derby against Gladbach. A creditable point away to Eintracht Frankfurt. But draws do not keep you up. Wins do.

And right now, Köln are two points above the relegation playoff spot. St. Pauli are breathing down their necks. The gap is precarious. The margin for error is shrinking by the week.

Köln’s chance to strike

Die Geißböcke host fellow relegation candidates Werder Bremen on Sunday, while St. Pauli face Bayern Munich. That is a huge advantage. If Köln win and Pauli lose as expected, the gap opens to five points. That is breathing room. That is survival territory.

But if they draw again? If they drop points at home to a direct rival? Then the pressure ramps up again.

Step forward Saïd El Mala. The 19 year old has been the breakout star of Köln’s season, scoring 10 goals and adding three assists. He also scored in the reverse fixture, a stoppage time equaliser that snatched a point from the jaws of defeat.

If Köln are to win this one, the teenager will almost certainly be involved.

Team news: Köln missing defensive trio

The Billy Goats will be without Joël Schmied, Luca Kilian and Timo Hübers, three defensive absences that could prove costly against a Bremen side that still carries a threat going forward.

Predicted Köln XI (4-2-3-1): Schwabe; Thielmann, Sebulonsen, van den Berg, Ozkacar; Hansen, Krauß; Huseinbasic, Kaminski, Ache; El Mala.

Bremen: The chance to breathe

Over at Werder Bremen, the picture is slightly rosier but only slightly.

They sit 14th, seven points clear of the automatic relegation spots. That is comfortable enough. But the battle to avoid the relegation playoff is much tighter. Bremen are on 28 points. Köln on 27. St. Pauli on 25.

If Bremen win on Sunday and Pauli lose to Bayern, the gap to the playoff spot opens to six points. That is not mathematically safe, but it is damn close.

The Green Whites missed a chance last time out, losing 2-1 at home to RB Leipzig. Salim Musah scored his first career goal late on, but it was not enough to steal a draw.

Another loss this weekend would not be a killer blow. But it would hurt. And it would pile pressure on the remaining fixtures.

Team news: Bremen’s injury mess

The injury report is a nightmare. Mitchell Weiser, Julian Malitini, Maximilian Wöber and Victor Boniface are all officially out. Cameron Puertas is suspended.

Jens Stage, Justin Njinmah, Jovan Milosevic, Marco Friedl and Karim Coulibaly are all doubtful. That is half a team.

Predicted Bremen XI (3-4-3): Backhaus; Sugawara, Pieper, Friedl; Agu, Bittencourt, Lynen, Stage; Mbangula, Musah, Schmid.

The stakes

This is a proper six pointer. The kind of match where the loser looks over their shoulder for the rest of the season and the winner starts planning for another year in the Bundesliga.

Köln have the home advantage and the teenage sensation. Bremen have the points cushion and a desperate need to stop the slide.

Expect tension. Expect mistakes. Expect a game that means everything to both sets of fans.

And do not be surprised if El Mala has the final word.
