It’s all go in Anthony Gordonland today. Newcastle United’s pacey winger is the talk of the Toon. And not in a good way.
The Anthony Gordon pendulum keeps swinging. Yesterday it swung from Bayern Munich to Barcelona. Today? Back towards the Germans.
It’s really starting to feel like Gordon is going to leave Newcastle this summer. The only question now is where.
THE ‘HIP INJURY’ THAT SMELLED FISHY
Let’s rewind. Gordon missed games against Bournemouth and Arsenal with a ‘hip injury’. Convenient timing, some said.
Eddie Howe didn’t mention the injury in his pre match press conference before one of those games. But he did go to great lengths to say that players who aren’t committed won’t play. That spoke volumes.
The club’s messaging was clear: genuine injury, no conspiracy. Then against Brighton, Gordon was available again. But he didn’t even come off the bench. When Newcastle desperately needed a spark.
We don’t like conspiracies. But this one stinks.
PLETTENBERG: BAYERN HAVE PRESENTED CONCRETE FIGURES
Now Gordon’s agents have been spotted meeting Barcelona representatives. An exit feels inevitable.
But it’s once again looking like Germany could be his destination. Florian Plettenberg has claimed on X that Bayern have presented Gordon’s camp with ‘concrete figures’.
“Despite interest from other top clubs, FC Bayern have now presented Anthony Gordon and his camp with concrete figures. Gordon could sign a five year contract at Bayern. The main issue remains an agreement with Newcastle, not with the player. Bayern have clear limits. Eberl/Freund are therefore in talks with several candidates.”
So the player wants it. Bayern want him. The only problem? The fee.
THE SELL ON CLAUSE THAT COMPLICATES EVERYTHING
Newcastle and Bayern are miles apart on valuation. Bayern don’t have a lot of wiggle room.
Newcastle could lower their asking price. But there’s a hefty sell on clause in Gordon’s contract. The club is desperate to set a precedent of being strong in negotiations. They’ve insisted any sales will be on their terms.
If Newcastle back down and let Bayern get Gordon for less? That tells every other club they’ll cave to lower offers.
WILL WE SEE GORDON IN A NEWCASTLE SHIRT AGAIN?
Our question now is simple. Will Gordon play for Newcastle again?
We’re not so sure.
The injury that wasn’t mentioned. The bench warming against Brighton. The agents meeting Barca. The concrete offer from Bayern.
It all points one way. Gordon is done on Tyneside. Now it’s just about how much and who gets him.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Bayern have made their move. Gordon wants five years in Germany. Newcastle want top dollar.
The pendulum has swung again. But this time, it might not swing back.
Watch this space. Because Anthony Gordon isn’t staying quiet for long.
