LIVERPOOL, June 26, Alisson Becker has made clear his intention to remain at Anfield despite interest from Juventus, a decision that could force Giorgi Mamardashvili to seek a loan move away from the club this summer.
The Brazilian goalkeeper, who has been instrumental in Brazil’s progress to the World Cup knockout stages with clean sheets against Haiti and Scotland, finds himself at the centre of a complex goalkeeping equation that Liverpool must resolve before the new season.
Juventus had appeared increasingly confident of brokering a deal for the 33 year old, who had reportedly reached a preliminary agreement with the Italian club on personal terms . However, Liverpool have firmly informed Alisson that they want him to stay, with manager Luciano Spalletti’s interest in a reunion failing to sway the Anfield hierarchy .
According to ESPN Brasil, Alisson has now definitively decided to honour his contract, which runs until the middle of 2027, and will remain with the Reds . The decision comes after Liverpool performed what reports have described as a “major Uturn” on his future, having previously started looking at potential replacements .
The goalkeeper has been left frustrated by the reversal, with his camp understood to be seeking direct talks with Liverpool’s senior hierarchy to clarify the club’s long term plans . Juventus had offered a three year deal worth €5 million per season, but Liverpool’s refusal to sanction the move has left the Serie A side needing to look elsewhere .
Mamardashvili dilemma
The situation leaves Liverpool with a decision to make regarding Mamardashvili. The Georgian international, signed from Valencia for £29 million in a deal agreed during Euro 2024, made 28 appearances across all competitions last season, covering for Alisson during the Brazilian’s injury absences .
However, with Alisson now seemingly set to remain as first choice, the 25 year old is understood to be ready to leave on loan in search of regular first team football . Reports towards the end of May suggested Mamardashvili’s representatives were already sounding out potential clubs, with the prospect of playing second fiddle to Alisson once again unlikely to appeal to a goalkeeper who was a regular for three seasons in La Liga with Valencia .
Liverpool’s hand is complicated by the fitness of Vitezslav Jaros, who was enjoying a solid loan season at Ajax before a serious knee injury in February that could sideline him for most of the year. Third choice Freddie Woodman, while aged 29, has made only 26 top tier appearances in England and Scotland.
For now, Liverpool’s goalkeeping department appears settled at the top, but the uncertainty surrounding Mamardashvili’s immediate future may yet force the club into an unanticipated decision this summer.
