DOHA, June 30, 2026. Jürgen Klopp has moved to quash mounting speculation linking him with the Germany head coach role, insisting “there’s nothing to say” on the matter while delivering a withering assessment of Julian Nagelsmann’s side following their World Cup exit.

The 59 year old, speaking on Magenta TV after Germany’s penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay, was characteristically forthright about the team’s failings before swiftly sidestepping questions about his own future. With Nagelsmann’s position now under scrutiny, Klopp has emerged as the natural successor in the eyes of many, yet the former Liverpool manager offered little encouragement to those hoping for a swift appointment.

“I haven’t thought about that yet,” Klopp said when asked about the national team vacancy. “I understand that when the national coach position is discussed, my name is mentioned in some form. But it’s not the moment to really talk about it. There’s nothing to say about it. I have a job that I enjoy very much. As far as I know, it’s not a part time job.”

‘We let them off the hook’

Klopp’s analysis of Germany’s performance against Paraguay was far more expansive, as he dissected a display that he felt lacked both invention and urgency. The four time champions had been tipped to overcome their South American opponents, but their inability to impose themselves drew sharp criticism from one of German football’s most respected voices.

“You have to attack down the wings. There’s no alternative,” Klopp stated. “We all know how well these guys can play, but they didn’t bring that to the pitch. In three months, we’ll be raving about Wirtz and Musiala again about how great they are, but not now.”

The 59 year old pinpointed Germany’s failure to capitalise on their opportunities as decisive, expressing disbelief that a side of their pedigree had allowed Paraguay to remain competitive throughout the 120 minutes.

“Paraguay had the opportunity to achieve something. Germany was under pressure to achieve something,” he observed. “Everyone in the stadium thought: Now they’ll turn it around! But we didn’t. We let them off the hook.”

Structural overhaul required

Beyond the immediate disappointment of Germany’s elimination, Klopp turned his attention to the wider issues confronting German football, calling for fundamental changes to the national setup that would require patience rather than quick fixes.

“We can talk about the DFB,” he said. “We absolutely have to change a few things. We can start with the Under 10s and wait a few years to see what the results are.”

The suggestion that Germany’s problems run deeper than the senior squad will resonate with those who have watched the nation’s decline from perennial semi finalists to early round casualties in recent tournaments. Yet for now, the immediate focus remains on Nagelsmann’s future and the question of who might lead the rebuild.

Klopp, however, was adamant that his focus lies elsewhere. “There are 500,000 ways to win a football match. You just have to find one,” he reflected, a sentiment that will serve as a reminder to Germany of how far they currently are from discovering it.
