Manchester United’s recruitment team appear determined to address one of the squad’s most obvious weaknesses ahead of the new season. According to reporting from Sky Sports, the club are continuing to monitor Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, while Fulham’s Antonee Robinson has emerged as another serious option.

With Champions League football returning to Old Trafford, squad depth is no longer a luxury. It is a necessity.

Left back becomes priority position

The situation facing Michael Carrick is relatively straightforward. Tyrell Malacia has departed, while Patrick Dorgu is expected to be utilised further forward. That leaves Luke Shaw as the only recognised senior left back available.

While Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui can provide cover, neither is a specialist in the role. Across a long domestic and European campaign, Manchester United require more certainty.

That reality explains why Lewis Hall remains firmly on the club’s radar.

Hall: The long term investment

As reported by Sky Sports earlier this year, Hall has been watched closely by United’s recruitment department. The former Chelsea academy graduate has continued his development at Newcastle and, despite missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad, remains one of the most highly regarded young full backs in the country.

Newcastle would undoubtedly demand a substantial fee. Having invested £28m to sign him from Chelsea, they are under little pressure to sell.

Robinson: The Premier League ready option

If Hall represents a long term investment, Antonee Robinson offers immediate Premier League reliability.

The Fulham defender has steadily established himself as one of the league’s most effective backs. His athleticism, consistency and attacking output have attracted attention from several clubs in recent transfer windows.

Manchester United’s interest makes sense. Robinson would arrive with extensive Premier League experience and could immediately challenge Shaw for a starting place. The uncertainty surrounding Fulham’s new managerial direction may also influence any decision regarding his future.

For United, he represents a safer option than Hall, albeit perhaps with a lower long term ceiling.

Planning beyond Luke Shaw

Perhaps the most significant detail is the timing. Luke Shaw’s contract expires next summer, making succession planning increasingly important. Injuries have limited his availability in recent seasons, and Manchester United cannot afford uncertainty in such a key position.

Whether the answer proves to be Hall, Robinson or another candidate entirely, the direction of travel is clear. United are looking beyond short term solutions. They are seeking stability, competition and a long term answer on the left side of their defence.

That process may still be in its early stages, but the fact that multiple targets are being assessed suggests the club are approaching the issue with greater strategic clarity than in previous windows.

Our view, sensible business, not headline chasing

From a Manchester United perspective, this feels like sensible business rather than headline chasing.

Hall is arguably the more exciting option. At 21, he could become United’s first choice left back for the next decade. His technical quality suits modern football, and there is still significant room for growth. The concern is cost. Newcastle are not known for selling key young players cheaply.

Robinson feels like the more realistic acquisition. He has already proven himself in the Premier League, rarely misses matches and would bring much needed reliability. United fans have spent too many seasons watching injury problems disrupt defensive continuity. Availability matters.

What should encourage supporters most is that the club appear to be addressing a genuine weakness before it becomes a crisis. Too often in recent years, Manchester United have reacted to problems rather than anticipated them.

If this summer is about building a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts, strengthening at left back is one of the smartest places to start.
