Manchester United hold one advantage over their rivals if they are serious about landing Alex Scott this summer. That unique factor is his step sister, Maya Le Tissier, already captaining the women’s side at Old Trafford.
As United seek to bolster their midfield options this summer, the club have been tipped to make a move for Scott. However, Chelsea are also reportedly ready to throw their hat into the ring for his signature.
Scott on England duty
The 22 year old has travelled with England to the World Cup, though he is not part of Thomas Tuchel’s official party for the tournament. Instead, he has made the trip to North America as one of five additional players brought along to provide cover during the side’s pre tournament friendlies.
Scott was an unused substitute as the Three Lions ground out a 1-0 victory over New Zealand in Florida. Nevertheless, he could yet feature in Wednesday’s final pre World Cup warm up clash against Costa Rica.
‘She text me straight away’
Speaking at a press conference following his international call up, Scott said: “We’ve grown up together, playing football together in the same teams back home, local football.
“We’re very close. We speak most days. And like I said before, obviously so proud of where she’s come from, and now where she is so successful.
“She has told me to just enjoy it and be yourself and show what you can do and do what you’ve been doing for all these years. I mean, she’s seen me grow a lot as a person, as a football player as well.
“I think back in the day when I was back home playing local football, she would have never thought that I’d have gone on to be a professional, and neither would I. So she’s obviously so pleased for me. She text me straight away as soon as she got the news.
“It’s nice to have someone around who’s experienced it and been around the Lionesses and England in general. She can help me out with advice on playing at the top level and top pressured situations.”
The family connection that could seal the deal
With reported interest mounting in Scott’s signature, United could do with every edge they can find. Having a family member already at the club could prove to be a decisive factor.
Le Tissier joined United from Brighton in the summer of 2022, the same year she earned her first caps for England. She was then named in the PFA Women’s Super League Team of the Year following her debut season at Old Trafford.
The 24 year old continued her impressive trajectory when she was voted the club’s Player of the Season in 2024. Later that year, she was appointed as United’s new captain following the departure of Katie Zelem.
A stunning rise
Having two England internationals from the same family representing the same club would be quite the enticing prospect for Scott. The playmaker has enjoyed a stunning rise through the football pyramid since making his name at Bristol City, who pocketed a club record £25m when Bournemouth snapped him up in 2023.
Scott has looked entirely at home in the Premier League since his move and played an instrumental role as Bournemouth achieved a club record sixth place finish this season. He is now set to feature in the club’s first European campaign as they prepare to compete in the Europa League.
However, he could yet find himself playing at the very highest level on the continent given United secured a Champions League berth.
The bottom line
Two England stars. One family. One club.
Maya Le Tissier is already a United legend in the making. Alex Scott could join her.
Chelsea are interested. Bournemouth want to keep him. But United have something no one else can offer: family.
“She text me straight away.” That bond could be the difference.
Scott is fast tracked towards a promising international future. And United could boast two England stars from the same household.
If they get this deal done, it won’t just be a signing. It’ll be a family reunion.
