Barcelona’s summer transfer window appears to be accelerating rapidly. Club president Joan Laporta has now acknowledged the club’s push to secure one of the Premier League’s most explosive attackers.
After weeks of speculation surrounding the future of Anthony Gordon, the Barcelona president delivered the clearest indication yet that the move is entering its final phase.
The Newcastle United forward is now expected to become one of the headline additions of Hansi Flick’s new look project.
What was said?
During a recent public appearance, Laporta was inevitably questioned about the club’s activity in the market. Unlike previous occasions where Barcelona officials preferred caution, the president appeared far more relaxed and excited.
When asked directly about the England international, Laporta responded: “Gordon’s signing is going through; I’ve been kept fully informed,” as per SPORT.
The numbers
The deal is believed to be worth around €70m fixed, plus another €10m in performance related add ons. Total? €80m.
Gordon is also expected to sign a long term five year contract once the final formalities are completed.
Barcelona could still add another attacker
Despite the excitement surrounding Gordon’s arrival, Barcelona do not appear ready to stop there. Laporta avoided giving any public answer regarding Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez when questioned during the same appearance.
The operation continues to generate discussion. Barcelona are not ruling out signing a new No. 9 even after Gordon is officially announced.
The bottom line
Newcastle need to sell. Gordon wants out. Barcelona have their man.
€80m. Five year deal. Laporta says it’s “going through.”
The Premier League loses another star. La Liga gains one. And Barcelona’s rebuild under Flick is taking shape.
One attacker is all but done. A striker could still follow. The summer window hasn’t even officially opened and Barcelona are already making moves.
