Former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper has been axed by Brondby.
Cooper only joined the Danish club on a three year deal last September. But his contract has been terminated a day after their final match of the season, having led them to a fourth placed finish in the league.
Alan Tate, Cooper’s assistant during his time at the City Ground, has also left.
‘We believed he would lift the club to a new level’
Scott McLachlan, vice chairman of the board of Brondby IF, released a statement.
“With the appointment of Steve, we made a choice that we both believed and hoped would lift the club to a new level,” he said.
“It has done so in several aspects, but neither the results nor the performances on the pitch have followed suit.
“Therefore, today we have chosen to say goodbye to both Steve and Alan.
“We send them on with our great respect and gratitude for their efforts and commitment to the club.”
New direction
Brondby simultaneously confirmed the appointment of a new football director, Julius Ohnesorge.
“Brondby IF must stand for something clear. A team, a culture and a direction that every fan can identify with and be proud of,” he said.
“We have not been consistent enough to demonstrate that recently. Especially during a challenging period for the club.
“Therefore, we have jointly decided to begin a new chapter, which is based on rediscovering the connection to the foundation and the shoulders on which we stand in Brondby IF.
“Now new energy and new leadership must strengthen the club’s identity and support its continued sporting development and ambitions.”
The bottom line
Fourth place. One season. Gone.
Cooper’s reputation was built on keeping Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and developing young talent. But Brondby wanted more. Results didn’t follow. Performances didn’t convince.
Now he’s looking for a new job. Tate too.
The Danish chapter is over. What comes next for Cooper remains to be seen.
