Xabi Alonso has urged calm at Real Madrid after criticism mounted following their defeat to Liverpool and a goalless draw with Rayo Vallecano, insisting the club knows exactly what the expectations are ahead of a tricky trip to Elche.

“We know where we are and the demands of Real Madrid, and everything that comes with it,” Alonso said. “We’re handling it as normal, maintaining the standards we set ourselves, there’s no need to overstate it.” Madrid go into Sunday’s game without a goal in their last two matches, raising early murmurs about form.

The drought has coincided with Kylian Mbappé cooling off after a bright start, but Alonso refused to pin the blame on his star forward. “Not scoring isn’t just down to Kylian. Just like conceding isn’t only the defenders’ fault. Scoring needs everyones contribution. The goals will come, I’ve no doubt,” he added.

Praise for squad after international break

Alonso said the squad returned sharp and hungry after national duty, though he warned Elche won’t be the typical newly promoted side. “Everyone has returned well, full of energy. They play good football, and it will be demanding. We prepare on the pitch, in meetings, video analysis, mentally and emotionally. Tomorrow is the time to show it.”

Injury updates: Rüdiger, Trent, Militao

Antonio Rüdiger trained normally on Saturday after two months out with a muscle issue, though he may be held back for the midweek trip to Athens. “Toni is close and that’s very good news. Maybe not tomorrow but we’ll assess him. His personality and competitive level is important to have.”

Alonso also spoke on Trent Alexander Arnold’s role after starting on the bench at Vallecas. “Fede can continue there, but having Trent gives more options. It’s not the only option, Militao plays there, or Asensio.” He praised Thibaut Courtois too, calling him a “pillar of the team” thanks to his leadership and decisive saves.

Youngsters and squad rotation

With a crowded match schedule, Alonso said younger players like Endrick will get minutes. “With many matches in a row, everyone will play and have their moment. Being fresh physically and mentally is crucial.”

Four straight away games ahead

Madrid now face four consecutive away fixtures Elche, Girona, Athletic in La Liga and Olympiacos in Europe, before returning to the Bernabéu on 7 December. Alonso said mindset matters more than venue. “Playing away means hostile environments, but preparation and focus remain the same.”

On managing form and expectation, he finished: “We mustn’t be swept away by every result not too optimistic or pessimistic. At Madrid we have to stay emotionally balanced, that’s the demand here.”
