Brazil’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup encountered another setback on Tuesday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Tunisia in an international friendly. The result extends a period of unconvincing form for the five-time world champions under coach Carlo Ancelotti.

An 18-year-old Estevao converted a first-half penalty, but a missed spot-kick from Lucas Paqueta in the second half cost the Seleção a victory, leaving them with just one win in their last five matches across all competitions.

Strong Lineup Fails to Impress

Ancelotti fielded an attacking lineup featuring Matheus Cunha, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, and the in-form Estevao. Despite the offensive firepower, Brazil struggled to break down a disciplined Tunisian side.

It was Tunisia who took a surprise lead midway through the first half. A superb through ball from Ali Abdi found striker Hazem Mastouri, who displayed calmness to slot the ball past the advancing Brazilian goalkeeper, Bento.

Penalty Drama Defines Contest

Brazil found a route back into the game shortly before halftime. A VAR review confirmed a handball in the Tunisian area, leading to a penalty. Estevao, who scored against Senegal days prior, stepped up to convert confidently for his fifth international goal.

The Seleção were awarded a second penalty with 12 minutes remaining, offering a chance to secure the win. However, substitute Lucas Paqueta took responsibility this time and blazed his effort over the crossbar.

Brazil’s appeals for a third penalty in the 89th minute, after Estevao went down in the box, were dismissed following a VAR review, concluding a frustrating evening.

Wider Friendly Results

In other international friendlies, Sadio Mane scored a first-half hat-trick in Senegal’s 8-0 rout of Kenya. African champions Ivory Coast secured a 2-0 win over Oman, while Algeria defeated Saudi Arabia 2-0. Morocco, the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists, beat Uganda 4-0. World Cup debutants Uzbekistan played out a 0-0 draw with Iran, a match in which they had defender Abdukodir Khusanov sent off.

The draw leaves Ancelotti with clear issues to address as Brazil’s stuttering build-up to the 2026 tournament continues.
