Atletico Madrid’s January plans are in limbo after reported loan target Giacomo Raspadori got cold feet over a switch to Roma. The Spanish club, keen to free up space and resources for a needed defensive signing, now face being stuck in a frustrating holding pattern.

The Italian forward, who only arrived from Napoli last summer, has found himself down the pecking order behind Julian Alvarez, Alexander Sorloth, and talisman Antoine Griezmann. With just a handful of starts from his 14 appearances, his hopes of making Italy’s World Cup squad are fading fast.

That lack of game time saw Atletico and Roma reportedly strike an agreement for an initial loan with an obligation to buy, triggered by certain performance benchmarks. The crucial catch for Atleti, however, is that the cash from any permanent sale wouldn’t land until the summer.

According to Diario AS, the 25 year old is “happy” at the Metropolitano despite his bench role and is “not convinced” about a mid season return to Serie A. This hesitation throws a major spanner in the works for Diego Simeone’s recruitment team.

“The squad needs balance, and sometimes that means difficult decisions,” a club source close to the situation said, hinting at the internal tug of war. “But the player’s mindset is always the most important thing.”

Raspadori staying put leaves Atletico in a bind. Without his departure, they lack the financial wiggle room and squad space to bring in their desired defensive reinforcement this month. It’s a classic January domino effect that has failed to fall.

The club’s hierarchy must now decide whether to push the player harder for a move or scrap their defensive plans entirely and trust the current group for a gruelling second half. With the Champions League knockout stages and a tight La Liga race ahead, it’s a gamble they didn’t want to take. All eyes are now on Raspadori’s final call, with the transfer window ticking down.
