The equation is simple for both sides: win, and a top eight finish and automatic qualification for the Europa League last 16, is suddenly within reach. When Roma welcome Stuttgart to the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday night, it’s a straight shootout between ninth and tenth, with the victor set to leapfrog into the coveted qualification places.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma sit tenth only on goal difference, a single point behind the pack occupying seventh and eighth. Their campaign has been a tale of two forms: impeccable on the road with four wins from four, but oddly vulnerable at home, where defeats to Lille and Viktoria Plzen have cost them dearly. “We must correct this at the Olimpico,” Gasperini stated bluntly. “Our fans deserve a proper European night.”

Stuttgart arrive with their own travel sickness in this competition. Their sole away win came at debutants Go Ahead Eagles, with losses at Basel and Fenerbahçe exposing continental frailties. Yet domestically, they’re a different beast coming off a stunning 4-1 demolition of Bayer Leverkusen on their travels. Boss Sebastian Hoeness knows the scale of the task. “Roma are a strong opponent, in a famous stadium. But we are not here just to look around.”

The hosts are boosted by the return of striker Evan Ferguson from injury, though they’ll be without key defender Mario Hermoso. Paulo Dybala, fresh from a goal and assist against Torino, remains the creative heartbeat. For Stuttgart, a major blow is the suspension of top scorer Bilal El Khannouss, placing the goalscoring burden firmly on Deniz Undav, whose Bundesliga form has been electric.

It’s a fixture dripping with tension. Roma’s home European record is a paradox they’re desperate to fix. Stuttgart’s poor historical away form in Europe is a mental hurdle they must clear. With so much on the line, a cagey start is likely, but the quality in attack on both sides should eventually tell.

Prediction: Roma 2-1 Stuttgart. The Giallorossi’s need, and their firepower, should just edge out a spirited Stuttgart side. Expect Dybala to be the difference maker in a match where defeat effectively ends any hope of a direct knockout pass.
