Chelsea are being forced to explore alternative midfield targets after Aston Villa jumped to the front of the queue to re sign Douglas Luiz, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues have made a new central midfielder a priority before the window slams shut, with their options stretched thin due to injuries to Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo. While Luiz’s name was high on their list, Villa have re entered “active talks” with current club Juventus and are now pushing hard to bring the Brazilian back to Villa Park.

“Chelsea are also exploring different options in midfield,” Romano confirmed, signalling a shift in strategy at Stamford Bridge. The West London club’s need is urgent, with only Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos, and the versatile Reece James as recognised senior options in the centre of the park.

The setback comes as Chelsea also weigh up defensive reinforcements, having just recalled youngster Aaron Anselmino from his loan at Borussia Dortmund. Supporters are growing anxious that the flurry of speculation could be a smokescreen for a quiet end to the window, with only returning loanees bolstering the squad.

With Villa making Luiz their “priority,” Chelsea’s recruitment team must now act swiftly. Attention could turn to a more proven Premier League operator like Wolves’ Ruben Neves, whose goal threat and passing range have been highlighted as an ideal fit. While a permanent move for Neves would command a fee, unlike a potential loan for Luiz, his immediate readiness may justify the cost for a Chelsea side that cannot afford another transitional season.

The coming days will test Chelsea’s planning and pull. Missing out on Luiz is a blow, but the pressure is on to secure a midfielder who can make an instant impact, not just a stopgap.
